Considering the Cinema Ep. 089: The DVD Infatuation Podcast – The Best Picture Podcast 4th Edition

Considering the Cinema Ep. 070: The DVD Infatuation Podcast - The Best Picture Podcast 4th Edition

At last, the long-dormant Best Picture Podcast rises again! For this special episode of The DVD Infatuation Podcast, host Dave “Dr. Shock” Becker is joined by Jason “Jay of the Dead” Pyles and filmmaker Mack “Mackula” Robins to revive a show that only released three episodes — many years ago now. In honor of the 98th Academy Awards tomorrow (March 15, 2026), the trio presents a long-overdue 4th Edition of The Best Picture Podcast, traveling back in time to revisit the 74th Academy Awards (held in 2002), celebrating the films of 2001.

In this retrospective Oscars discussion, Dave, Jay, and Mack examine the five Best Picture nominees from that year: A Beautiful Mind (the eventual winner), Gosford Park, In the Bedroom, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and Moulin Rouge! Along the way, they revisit the cultural moment of early-2000s cinema, discuss standout performances and filmmaking achievements, and debate which movie truly deserved the Academy’s top honor.

The conversation then expands beyond Best Picture as the hosts dig into the major categories of the 2002 Oscars, highlighting memorable wins, controversial snubs, and overlooked performances. From acting races and directing decisions to screenplay awards and technical categories, these film nerds explore what happened at the ceremony versus what they believe should have happened. Finally, each host answers a challenging question: If you could change only one thing about the 2002 Academy Awards, what would it be? Join us!

Note: Regarding the episode artwork… Because the iconic Oscar statuette is copyright-protected, the artwork for this episode features a creative alternative: an Ai-generated golden statue inspired by Jennifer Connelly, honoring her Oscar-winning performance in A Beautiful Mind. Continue reading
