Considering Horror Cinema Ep. 026: What Has Been Hiding in My Attic

Considering the Cinema Ep. 026 - Midsommar and 976-Evil

Don’t whiz on the Sacred Ancestral Tree! Good advice. Anybody who has been listening to Jay of the Dead’s podcasts for awhile knows that there is often content that was recorded months (or even years!) previously before it ever sees the light of day. But that content does eventually get released!

In Episode 026 of Considering Horror Cinema, your late-night Horror host Jason Pyles (aka “Jay of the Dead”) is finally revealing the podcast recordings that have been hiding in his attic! All the reviews in this episode were recorded in 2019. This episode has the longest review ever committed to the film 976-Evil (1989), as Jay of the Dead discusses it with Greg “The Gray Man” Bensch. (It’s about an hour long.) Then Jay does a 75-minute deep-dive discussion of Midsommar (2019) with the oracle Jody Horror Guy (of the Reel Blood Podcast Network) and his unclouded intuition. Jay also gripes a little about the term “Folk Horror” and goes on a lot about the scariest disease ever, Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Jay also brings you solocast reviews of BrightBurn (2019) and The Intruder (2019) and The Perfection (2019) and Friend Request (2017) and The Hunted (2014) and Basement Jack (2009).

  1. Loved the discussion on Midsommar. INBRED HORROR!

Jody’s theory on Pelle has me equally flabbergasted. I knew he had orchestrated the events to an extent, but I fear this theory is going to lead me into a pretty lengthy youtube hole. Wish me luck.

And I must say, as a person who touts trivial horror subgenres such as PIG HEADED HORROR, I cannot believe that you have such an issue with the label “Folk Horror”. Sure, it’s a little harder to peg down than something like “pig-headed”, however if you look at the root, folk, it’s pretty easy to understand. Folk is defined as “relating to the traditional art or culture of a community or nation”. If that doesn’t describe Midsommar, than maybe we did not watch the same film. Without the traditional culture of the Haarga Community this film would have had no conflict, aside from the opening act.

Again, loved the episode. Especially the deep-dives. Keep it up! These long episodes really make my work days fly by.

  2. This was a fantastic episode! I loved it! I agree with you on Friend Request, good movie! You captured my interest with your review of The Hunted so I watched it and I really liked it. It made me jump like 5 times! Really fun film. That movie The Perfection was a trip!

You mentioned Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, and I wanted to chime in on it because I’m actually an MBSP survivor. My mother used to give me “Potions.” Which were basically household products and medicine mixed with yogurt to hide the taste. As a child I wound up going to the doctor at least twice a month. No worries, I wasn’t bothered by you mentioning MBSP. Fifteen years of weekly therapy has guided me to a good place and I’m ok with with the hand I was dealt. I thought you might want to know that it’s a very elusive ailment, especially if the parent of guardian isn’t caught. Mine was not. The doctors never caught on. It took many years to figure it all out. I didn’t even realize what had been done to me until my mid twenties. When I was a kid, I just thought it was normal to take “Potions” and visit the doctor 2-4 times a week. When you are a kid, you take everything you are given as normal and that is that. Being sick was my normal.

Anyway, I always like it when people introduce real world horror on your podcasts, so I took this as an opportunity to share my own. Thanks for giving me the opportunity.

Thanks for the great show! I’ve been following your podcasts since the Horror Palace days and you have provided me many hours of great entertainment over the years! Take care and keep up the good work! 🙂

  3. Jay,

The latest episode of The Wat-Zee Party Horror Show should be coming out in the next couple days. The reason I’m telling you this, my friend, is because my co-host, Dave Zee, and I talk at length about this very episode of Considering the Cinema! 🙂

You and The Gray Man most certainly put together the most in-depth review of 976-EVIL (1988) out there in Podcast Land, for sure, and you both should be proud of that. Well done.

I also want you to know that I personally believe the discussion that you and Jody Horror Guy had on Midsommar (2019) is the BEST I’ve yet heard. I have a strange relationship with Midsommar in that I consider it masterful in all ways, yet I don’t particularly enjoy the film… ALSO… the elements of the story that appeal to me are things that I’m just not hearing ANYONE discuss! It’s frustrating! Ha ha.

That said, Jay… you and Jody tackled some of these things that are simply not spoken of when folks review this movie, and I was so glad to hear that. This film pulls a fascinating and endlessly clever trick on the viewer with regards to how indoctrination plays into both the plot IN the film… and our reactions as viewers OUTSIDE of the film. I feel like this review is the first I’ve heard that examined some of these things, and I was overjoyed.

Much love, Jay and to your guests on this show.

    Your buddy,
    Mister Watson
