  1. Top Ten (Plus One) Horror Films of 2019:

    11. Three From Hell
    10. Piercing
    9. One Cut of the Dead
    8. Ready or Not
    7. Annabelle: Comes Home
    6. In Fabric
    5. Climax
    4. Haunt
    3. The Lighthouse
    2. Doctor Sleep
    1. Midsommar

    Honorable Mentions (Alphabetically):
    Crawl
    Escape Room
    Hagazussa
    I See You
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

    Biggest Disappointment (Worst):
    Black Christmas

    Guilty Pleasure:
    Countdown
    Polaroid

    • Great to hear from you, Mr. Dragon!
Thanks for posting your list. I don’t think I even heard of “In Fabric,” though I have heard some great things about “Piercing.” I see we have the same pick for the Worst, ha ha. And I’ve been curious about “Polaroid” for a long time now. We’re getting a few haunted camera movies now… is this becoming a Horror sub-genre? ha ha Thanks for writing. -J

  2. Since you put joker as horror, I will follow suit.

    10. The Perfection
    9. The Dead Don’t Die
    8. Brightburn
    7. Doctor Sleep
    6. Us
    5. Crawl
    4. Hellboy
    3. Lords of Chaos (not sure if horror, )
    2. Joker (not sure if horror)
    1. Midsommar

I agree about Tigers are not Afraid being overrated. Was expecting more horror, even though can see it being a horror through the Lens of the characters. Twas a good story, gave it 7/10.

Head Hunter was a great movie and would love to see it with a big enough budget to include the creatures in that world and battles taking place. Could be a Norwegian epic. With the success that André Øvredal has been having, would be a great project for him to be apart of.

Felt Annabelle comes home was underrated, I usually prefer gore and kills in a movie, but also respect movies that are genuinely creepy, which I feel this succeeded.

Really enjoyed Childs Play, Scary Stories, and Pet Semetary. Actually prefer the 2019 version of Pet Semetary to the original, but do enjoy the original as well as the sequel. I thought the retelling of Childs Play was really well done and did a good job separating from the original.

Twas a great overall year for Cinema, my all around top 10 last was crammed with 9-10 star movies.

    • Hi Sam,
Thanks for commenting and posting your list for 2019! Yeah, I’ve gotten some push-back for calling “Joker” a Horror film. I could see arguments for both sides, really, but the film scared me, so that’s what led to my decision. I didn’t get to “Lords of Chaos” yet, so I can’t weigh in there. The genres bleed over into one another more than ever these days. Our lists look pretty close! Glad you got to see “The Head Hunter.” That movie is a treasure to me. -J

  3. My brother great episode!

    Joker brother really?!?! Lol

Well I made a list of the movies I seen, be forewarned everyone I only watched approximately 20 horrors in 2019.

    1. Darlin’
    2. Haunt
    3. Us
    4. 3 From Hell
    5. Harpoon
    6. Brightburn
    7. Happy Death Day 2 U
    8. Pet Semetary
    9. In The Tall Grass
    10. Escape Room

Ones I haven’t seen that intrigue me and could make the list and bump some:
    -Ready Or Not
    -The Lighthouse
    -Countdown
    -Luz
    -Nightmare Cinema

    • Don’t knock Joker until you’ve seen it! It’s very disturbing to me, though you still probably won’t call it Horror. It reminds me, in tone, of a milder version of “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.” And there is no specific “kill count minimum” anywhere that dictates whether a film can be Horror. Maybe there should be. ha ha

Yeah, I keep hearing good things about “Luz,” too. I think it’s on Shudder right now! Thanks for writing and sending your list!
      -J

  4. 10) Pet Sematary
    9) The Curse of La Llorona
    8) Child’s Play
    7) Eli
    6) Annabelle Comes Home
    5) It Chapter Two
    4) Crawl
    3) Midsommar
    2) Doctor Sleep
    1) Us

Only saw 12 and the other 2 sucked (Black Christmas and Godzilla: King of the Monsters)

  5. UPDATE TO THE LIST ALREADY!!!

    1. The Furies
    2. Darlin’
    3. Haunt
    4. Us
    5. 3 From Hell
    6. Harpoon
    7. Brightburn
    8. I’ll Take Your Dead
    9. Escape Room
    10. In The Tall Grass

The Furies is awesome it does has problems but it is a fun, exciting and gory slasher!

    • Thanks for the updated list, BillChete! I will definitely get to “The Furies” now. (I always think that title says, “The Furries.” ha ha That’s a horse of a different color altogether.)

I actually saw “I’ll Take Your Dead,” and I thought it was very interesting. It’s been in my notes to discuss forever now, but I never talked about it yet. And unfortunately, I forgot all about it until now.

I’m surprised you liked “In the Tall Grass.” Doesn’t seem like your kind of movie at all.

      Thanks for writing!

      -J

  6. In the Tall Grass was interesting, kept me captivated, BUT after I get through more movies I’m sure it will drop off the list. Remember I only seen 20 or so films but so far it makes it.

Really looking forward to The Lighthouse and Ready Or Not!

  7. Hey Jay

    Great episode!

Seeing you talked about unplanned I want you to check out the film : 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) It’s about what life could be like for women if abortion is banned.

Ps Light of my Life (2019) is amazing thanks for suggesting it, surprised it’s not on this list hope it’s on your favourite movies of the year !

    – Maurice

    • Hi Maurice!

      Thanks for listening!

Yes, I saw “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” (2007) the year it was released. It’s a very compelling and troubling film, but I thought it was a good contribution to this debate. Now we just need a really good adoption film to round out the discussion!

I didn’t consider “Light of My Life” to be Horror (though I could certainly see arguments to support that). But it is, in fact, my No. 1 film of the year (my BMOTY – Best Movie of the Year) on Movie Podcast Weekly’s Top 10 Movies of 2019 episode:

      https://moviepodcastweekly.com/movie-podcast-weekly-ep-334-top-10-movies-of-2019/

      Thanks for writing!

Next week we’ll bring you the Top 10 Movies (All Genres) of the 2010s Decade!

      Your pal,
      Jay

  8. ANOTHER UPDATE!!!

    This is fun, loll

    1. 8.0 Boar
    2. 8.0 The Furies
    3. 8.0 Darlin’
    4. 8.0 Haunt
    5. 7.5 Us
    6. 7.5 3 From Hell
    7. 7.5 Harpoon
    8. 7.0 Brightburn
    9. 6.5 Escape Room
    10. 6.0 I’ll Take Your Dead

Omg Boar is an amazing creature flick with Nathan Jones, John Jarrett and Bill Moseley, witty writing and dialog so fun great practicals just 2 CG scenes that killed it, would of been a 10. Such a fun horror movie!!!

The Furies is awesome it does has problems but it is a fun, exciting and gory slasher!

    • Bill, Boar is my 2019 guilty pleasure. There are a couple of practical effects scenes that are quite brutal and fun. I love the beastly freaks!
The Furies has such a cool concept. I wish the execution could have been better. Iv’e seen all of these and the only one I didn’t like was US, so still a solid list even though you haven’t seen as many as you would like. Great stuff.

  9. I have some thoughts on “I See You”. It was an interesting view. It’s really two movies, where in the first half, you have these strange occurrences taking place inside this family home. Then the movie takes a complete turn and becomes this “phrogging” movie. So while is it interesting that one of the surviving victims chooses this way to get “revenge”, the films entire existence plays on one fact that you must completely ignore order to reconcile the story.

I don’t know about you Jason, but I have never seen or ran into a situation whereby, a person leaves a residence (any person and any residence), where the person drives off without closing the garage door and then 30 seconds later, the garage door closes, allowing the phroggers to gain access to the house. This was such an obvious mistake, but it was too important to the story to exclude.

Also, why this method in the first place? If he wants his revenge, he could have simply killed him at any time. The concept to sneak into the home, just to “mess” with the killer is preposterous. He knows the guy is a killer and very dangerous, yet he exposes his friend to the threat with deadly consequences. He chooses to pursue revenge in the most convoluted way possible. His attempts to “mess” with the guy fell on deaf ears and blind eyes, because he was in no way disturbed by the weird occurrences that he was staging throughout the house.

It was an interesting film in the way that the story was presented, but at the end of the day, the story itself is too “smart” for it’s own good and fails on the central premise of revenge on a killer. Performances were fine and the technical aspects of the movie were also good, so I’d rate this one a 6.5/10 and a strong rental recommendation. I’d also include this as an honorable mention.

Unplanned made my recommended list as you know at an 8/10. It is real-life horror. As far as the abortion “debate”, there is no debate. You are either for child murder or you are not. It has nothing to do with “reproductive health” or anything other than what it is, child murder, period. We must stand firm and defend all the millions of lives that have been taken and continue to be for those who extol convenience and selfishness over the sanctity of life. It gives me confidence knowing that no one escapes judgement and that the child murderers destiny is the millstone.

We had a lot of synergy in our lists and so when you were talking about your biggest disappointments, I laughed out loud because you had very similar experiences with these movies as I did. Thank you for the complements.

I love these best of the year episodes and you were still able to put together a good list even though you might not have seen all the movies that you wanted to. It was very fun having the Phantom on the episode. She is fantastic. Overall, I like all of your picks with the exception of the Head Hunter.

I love your challenge to Bill and the Phantom. I hope we can all see more this year and come up with great lists. I know you looking forward to Antlers. We are both fans of Scott Cooper and I’m intrigued for his first foray into the horror genre. My most anticipated movie for 2020 is James Wan’s Malignant. Really looking forward to his take on the slasher.

I saw The Grudge yesterday. It was just okay. It’s different enough from the other films, but it wasn’t very scary. The first horror film for 2020 won’t make any lists for me. Thanks for the fun episode Jason and Lady Phantom! I look forward to a wonderful 2020 with you.

  10. Sorry Jay, but I can’t understand how you could leave One Cut of the Dead off your top 10 list if you saw it. Anyway.. love your list and happy new year.

    Fright Night Fetes

  11. ANOTHER UPDATE AGAIN!!!

    1. 8.0 Boar
    2. 8.0 The Furies
    3. 8.0 Darlin’
    4. 8.0 Haunt
    5. 7.5 Us
    6. 7.5 3 From Hell
    7. 7.0 Brightburn
    8. 7.0 Harpoon
    9. 6.5 Ready Or Not
    10. 6.5 Escape Room

Got around to Ready or Not, I was more excited to see this film than any and I was let down a little. It’s an overrated film but I still liked it. Not near as good as I expected. It cracks the Top 10 but just barely.

This is by far the worst year in horror since I’ve been doing Top 10 lists since 2001.

Still a few more to see but I think my list is pretty stable now!

  12. MADE SOME ERRORS ON RATINGS AND POSITIONS. I THINK THIS WILL BE BE FINAL TOP 10S!

    1. 8.0 Boar
    2. 8.0 Darlin’
    3. 8.0 The Furies
    4. 7.5 Us
    5. 7.0 Haunt
    6. 7.0 3 From Hell
    7. 7.0 Harpoon
    8. 6.5 Ready Or Not
    9. 6.5 Escape Room
    10. 6.0 BrightBurn

  13. ANOTHER UPDATE!

    1. 8.0 Boar
    2. 8.0 Darlin’
    3. 8.0 The Furies
    4. 7.5 Us
    5. 7.0 Haunt
    6. 7.0 3 From Hell
    7. 7.0 Ma
    8. 7.0 Harpoon
